M8

M8

I got to play around with Josh‘s M8 tonight. It’s a damn cool camera, but I’m surprised he lets anyone touch the thing after I found out how much it costs.

@Myke+ Yeah no doubt!

@bontie-lou Exactly. It’s hard not to be a little wowed by that camera.

I love seeing something so extravagant captured with such simplicity. Gorgeous.

They’re doing free test drives of the M8 right now (body and a couple lenses). I’m trying one out tomorrow (primarily out of curiosity) and am curious about your initial impressions of it. Have you used a rangefinder before?

Those things are not cheap.

@Stefan Hartwig Thanks! No, it was the first time I’d ever used a range finder. It was definitely different and took a little while to get used to. I think I’ve just gotten so used to my Nikon that it took some “unlearning”. The sound of the shutter was probably my favorite part, but the range finder made rethink how I might frame a shot. Would I buy one? No, it’s too rich for my blood, but it was great fun to play with!

@Timwillis Yeah, no kidding!

This turned out really nice!

Tom, its funny that the shutter sounds was your favorite part. I love it too, but its most people’s biggest complaint with the M8. Historically Leica M’s have had some of the quietest shutters so you can be silent when taking photos … and then the M8 came out with a ridiculously loud shutter. When I was taking photos of Kevin talking and everyone would turn and look after I did because the whole room could hear it, kind of a bummer.

Leica’s offering an upgrade starting this August to replace the shutter with an almost silent one and I’ll definitely be doing it. Although I’m gonna miss the pleasant sound it has right now, I won’t miss being a distraction when I want to get photos in quiet areas.

@Josh Bryant Interesting… but that is a good point. It might sound good but for the most part it’s better to be distraction free if you can. Hopefully the upgrade won’t be too steep.
