The picnic area at White Sands after this summer’s heavy rains left an inch of water on the excessively flat desert floor.

Arresting: this held my attention for a long while and gave a lot to mull over. So many contrasts and contradictions. Thank you.

Tremendous image! I’ve been there and this is astonishing to me that water could be there at all, let alone stand long enough for this view. You had a marvelous stroke of luck to be there at exactly the right time and did a great job with your capture!

It was more than a stroke of luck. Most of the road into the park was closed down because of flooding, so the admission fee was waived for anyone going in. You could drive in to a point, and then had to walk the rest of the way. I asked one of the rangers how often they get rain like this, and he said, “we don’t.”

What a great photo. It’s not often that White Sand sis flooded, so you certainly got a once-in-a-long-time photo!

Seen in your The American Southwest set. (?)

Yeah, I believe the park ranger said the amount of rainfall they had right before I took this shot was more than they had in the past five years.

That is a fantastic image! It was so windy when I was there a few weeks ago that I was unsuccessful in shooting these picnic “space ships” the way I wanted. I love this! I wish those trash cans weren’t right behind the silver ships, but there’s really no way around that.
