I was on tour once with the jazz guitarist Earl Klugh. (I think it was around ‘86, ‘87) It was a day off in Portland, and we all needed to do laundry. So, we hit a place, then go over to the bar next door while we’re waiting. They had a ton-o-beers on tap, almost all local brews, and couldn’t decide. So this guy sitting by us starts us off by buying us a sampler of the locals. We sat there through the rest of the afternoon and got pretty toasted with this guy (nice guy too), then he said he had to go. So, we went back to drinking local brews between checking our laundry. Then back in the bar while tipping up yet another tasty round, I look up at the TV and sputter “HEY, THERE’S THAT GUY!!!”. He was on the news doing an interview. Turns out he was the mayor of Portland. (laugh)
Hey, let the burger family know I’ll take ‘em up on that offer my next time in the area. :-)

Brand spanky new looking! Congratulations!

Thanks agilitynut:-) We almost feel like we should have a party for them. Maybe when we get Papa Burger home we’ll have a welcome to the neighborhood celebration.

How great!!! I’ll keep my eyes and ears open for a Papa Burger.

Roadsidepictures,
Glad you like them. They make you laugh when you look out the window and see them back there. We do have the Papa for the family but he was too big to fit in the Uhaul on this trip:-) He’s about 8’ 6” and almost that wide. We just have to plan another 1300 mile round trip to bring him home now.
Although, we’re always looking to adopt so if you spot any others needing a home let us know. We have now made our entire backyard into a fiberglass mascot display area so there’s still some room out there.
romleys
How the hell did you get these? These are in perfect condition!
Vintage Roadside
Romleys,
Believe it or not it took a few years to find a complete set in nice condition. We found these about 650 miles away and they were owned by a former A&W operator. He loved them and had decided to have them restored to original colors before parting with them. We’ve now redone our entire backyard to provide a home for them:-)
We do have a blog which describes the backyard makeover if you’re interested.

Those are awesome - great find! We don’t have A&W in our neck of the woods, just XXX
(edit) A whole backyard full of ‘em? I want to visit! If Papa’s in the Northwest and need’s company until his trip home, I’m glad to oblige ;O)
Vintage Roadside
Sedanman - that’s a great shot of the XXX. We don’t really have any of the real A&W’s down here in Portland anymore either. I don’t count the new combo KFC/A&W as the real thing.
Glad you like them - they’re a lot of fun to see out in the backyard.
Sedanman
Oh, so you’re in Portland. I’ll definately have to look you up next time I’m down that way. On the same trip that I visited the Barn Buster Burger place in ‘89, I remember stopping at a vintage A&W or XXX somwhere in or near the Siskyous - I’m pretty sure it was an A&W.
C,Chloƫ
These are awesome! We have A&W here, thankfully. I think they make the best root beer.
I think this is RANDOM. You have been invited to join You say What? here!
Vintage Roadside
… . - Glad you enjoy them. A&W does still make great root beer.

Oh, do I envy you!

Loungelistener - if you ever pass through Portland they’re always up for guests.

Loungelistener - what a fantastic story. That would have been “Bud” Clark. He’s quite a character around Portland. One thing we have no shortage of here is local brewing:-)

Thank you Guy as in Gee. We really enjoy them. They’re pretty undemanding also:-)

It’s always fun to see these guys pop up in my “photos you’ve commented on” every time somebody new see’s it - I never seem to tire of them!
Vintage Roadside
Hey Thor,
Glad you still enjoy seeing them. We enjoy seeing them every morning when we look out the window. Once it finally stops raining we’ll get some new shots of them getting their Spring washings:-) The “old” Papa Burger is mighty filthy at the moment!
Sedanman
So what are your long term plans for him, Jeff? Keep him original, or repaint like the rest of the family and turn him into an “Uncle Burger”?
Vintage Roadside
Thor,
We keep going back and forth on what to do with him as far as the colors. If we didn’t have the set that was already restored (with original colors) we’d paint him that way for sure. But since he’s the “black sheep” of the family we might go with something a little different color-wise. Any suggestions?
Sedanman
That’s a tough call - I actually like what he’s “wearing”, so maybe you could re-do him the same way. Another option would be to keep the checked shirt, but do it in orange or red instead. He can be that Uncle that never quite fit’s in with the rest of the family (O;
Vintage Roadside
He does have a certain “something” going with that outfit. Maybe we could give him some stripes on the shirt and a pattern on his tie. The vest could also be something snazzy. He’ll always be the uncle the kids love and the grownups shake their heads at:-)
Shirley’s
I hope that’s a chocolate milkshake, and not beer ^^

Shirley: That’s a root beer in his hand!

Shirley’s - They only get beer on New Years Eve:-)

Oh lawdy! This is priceless! I never knew “Betty” was really Mama Burger, although she did appear to be down on her luck, stuck out in the wilds of western Michigan. What a hoot to look out the window and see them every day.
Vintage Roadside
Church of One - It does appear Betty has hit a bit of a rough spot in her life:-) Maybe someday she can be reunited with her mug and burger - she looks a little lost without them:-)
Here’s “Dad” from the family. We really do love seeing them everyday:-)
