The Day There Was No News

Taken by Jason Arber.

Today there was no news. And here is the proof.

Music: Ben Frost - Theory of Machines

For more videos, see my company Wyld Stallyons

(I’m also well aware that Time Trumpet did a very similar concept, but I had never seen it or knew of its existence until you wonderful folks drew my attention to it. A tip of the hat to Adam Buxton and Armando Ianucci for being first!)

Interesting. Makes me think of what really is classed as news. And also in what way this could happen. Maybe if all forms of modern communication was down for a day, phone, internet etc. A communication black out. So the presenters would have to talk about what happen to them today.

I love it.. a nice tag would be ‘the day today’

Personally, I am so intrigued by the concept of this visual moving imagery. Along with possessing an aesthetic appeal accompanied with the perfect music, the meaning is deep. When the news anchors look straight into the camera with nothing to say, it almost has a feeling of relief.

Adam Buxton did something similar: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4pY3QtiGyo

Absolutely awesome

Ha! Never seen Adam Buxton’s video before! He’s clearly as fascinated by the blankness newscasters exude when they’re not reading the news as I am. His video is better than mine, however, godammit.

no way yours is far better, its has greater suspense and engagement, your music is perfect and your titles are genius

Nicely done. The “Adam Buxton” vide is from Time Trumpet.

A day without news would be hugely newsworthy. “Nobody Died” and “There Is No War” alone would be top stories, and all the news stations would go on a 24-hour No News Watch.

OMG

This is just amazing!

this is incredible!

The saddest thing about this video is that there’s never a day without news… how many wars are going on right now? How many Mugabes or Kim Jong Ils are out there doing things and we don’t bother to report on it? I know this is a commentary on crap that they put on the TV but still, what they don’t say is probably way more important.

This was originally done on a BBC Two comedy series called Broken News. This is really well executed though.

@deadrobot You should have seen the graphics these replaced only a few weeks ago. These are hideous in comparison. They’re hideous on their own in my opinion.

No news is good news.

Especially good in this case.

I think this speaks to a particularly sensationalist, pessimistic mindset. The fact that it didn’t even occur to you that maybe people would like to hear some positive reporting on the world around them speaks volumes, I think.

No terrorist attacks, therefore reporters have nothing to talk about. What a sad commentary on the media.

@pixelsurgeon: No really, this is better than the other attempt. You somehow manage to infuse this desperation into your piece. At first, it’s great, it’s clever, but then you realize what this entails—nothing good happened, but nothing bad happened either. The expression of blankness manages to both calm you and make you uncomfortable.

I especially like the string “There is no war […] There are no funny stories.”

Great work, but c’mon - no cute baby animals? Anywhere? Totally unrealistic. ;)

Also, it reminds me of an old TV show (Mary Tyler Moore, maybe) in which the weatherman was pissed off about something or other. His report consisted of a single line: “There is no weather, anywhere in the world, to report today.”

The music, the scrolling, and the suspended animation gave me a flashback of SimCity with the game paused. Anyways, superb.
