after reading this book i am uber-obsessed with reading labels. you would be shocked by how many products contain high fructose corn syrup and other corn bi-products.
I’ve been on a quest to avoid it for about a year now. It’s extremely tough to do….reading labels amuses me though now. For instance, the FIRST ingredient in most BBQ sauces is HFCS.
It is shocking. But not all bad things come from corn… I mean if it wasn’t for corn we wouldn’t have the film “Field of Dreams,” the Corn Palace in South Dakota ( www.cornpalace.org/ ), and me (mandatory corn with every meal back in Iowa).
I axed HFCS about a year ago (I’m terribly upset that good ol’ Heinz still has it in the ketchup! what the french, toast? c’mon, guys) and it’s freaky when I accidentally get something with it… I’m a mess.
Wow, sounds like an interesting book. I have always been bothered by what is contained in processed foods and am so grateful for organic food stores and local markets. The only time I drink coke is when I am in Europe because I prefer it with sugar vs. processed corn. They always serve it in bottles like this one which I think is so cool.
likewise for coke bottled in mexico (which we can find in stores around l.a.) - it is made with pure cane sugar, not hfcs. farmers’ markets are the way to go!
blechhhhhh. me, tooo!
coming from a health background….
it is in EVERYTHING
sometimes i avoid it and sometimes i dont.
depends on how high up on the list of ingredients it is.
it is a riveting book…it was actually recommended to me by a woman on the subway, when we were in new york back in november. it makes you rethink a lot of your food choices.
don, there is no comparison, truly. i am a big fan of michael pollan, but some folks believe his writing is “all over the map” - my thinking tends to be that way, so i relate to his trains of thought. :)
Oh yes, I am a label reading junkie! It takes me forever to get in and out of a grocery store most of the time, unless I already know the products I’m buying. To this day I still haven’t gotten to read a Michael Pollan book, but I’m dying to. Glad to hear it comes with great recommendation !
I just about ordered this book, but at the last second I changed my mind. I watched a PBS documentary on corn recently and now I’m hooked on the subject. I’m so glad to see you liked the book. I’m going to order it right now!

I hear “mexican” coke doesn’t use high fructose corn syrup. I still haven’t confirm yet though. I’m just a sucker for coke bottle shots. Well done.

Oh, how I would love to try one of these… I imagine that it tastes so much better with pure cane sugar.
