My Day, Yesterday

Taken by Garrett Murray.

Yesterday, in video. Shot throughout the day, put together and uploaded today. You should do the same. And when you do, put it in the My Day, Yesterday group. Don’t add any music or anything, only what’s recorded via the camera.

Shot with the D90, with both the 50mm 1.8 and 28mm 2.8 primes.

Very nice.

Sweet! Nicely done.

Simmy.

Well done, sir. I love little snapshot glances into people’s lives — so fascinating.

04 October 9th, 2008

jennamarino

hm. no physical human interaction. I’m a little sadder for having seen this.

05 October 9th, 2008

Anton Peck

@jennamarino I was kind of thinking that too, considering how different mine would look from Garrett’s.

06 October 9th, 2008

garrettmurray

@Anton @tomcarmony Thanks!

@Simmy Thanks! Your turn now.

@jennamarino Well, I did interact with the people at the laundromat and deli, but I didn’t record those. Although you’re right in general, most week days I don’t interact with humans in person much. I want to see your day!

Cool video! Are you using the 18-105 kit lens to shoot this, or something else?

08 October 9th, 2008

garrettmurray

@Josh I was using the 50mm 1.8 and 28mm 2.8 primes.

09 October 9th, 2008

sourjayne

This is rad. I would be soooo late for work if I tried to record my morning routine though.

Quick question: About how much time did you spend editing this together?

I could see myself getting overly anal about the production quality and spending way too much time on it until I got frustrated (thinking of my own history with video) - run-on sentence for the win.

11 October 9th, 2008

garrettmurray

@Anton I spent about an hour or two.

12 October 9th, 2008

twatson

Rad.

How’d you find holding the D90 through all of this? I find it’s sometimes a bit tricky getting the focus right and holding the camera at the same time. It’s definitely a photo camera first with video as a bonus feature.

13 October 9th, 2008

kartooner

Reminds me of a JCPenny ad.

14 October 9th, 2008

garrettmurray

@twatson I used a tripod from time to time. Honestly, the biggest issue I have with video right now is I can’t figure out how to get the exposure to stay locked without holding down the lock button. I really need to read the book to figure out how to set it so I don’t have to hold that stupid button the whole time.

Darice

Well done…. must be the most fascinating video I saw recently, seriously!

16 October 9th, 2008

Sujay T.

Fantastic! You should do these every once in a while, when it gets varied.

17 October 9th, 2008

hrrrthrrr

what is that thing at 18 seconds?! i want it.

18 October 9th, 2008

twatson

@garrettmurray Yeah, I keep meaning to read through the manual a bit more to figure out all the features with the video. I jumped right in and started using it since I was so familiar with all the Nikon controls but as a result my knowledge of how all the video works is pretty limited. I just might have to try this tomorrow…

Makenosound

Very nice. This is exactly what I want a D90/1D Mark II for.

Do you always wear a hat whilst you email?

20 October 9th, 2008

Patrick Haney

I’ll be giving this a try tomorrow with my Leica D-LUX 3 camera, which shoots decent video in 16:9. I’m not sure how it’ll turn out given that I’ve never shot more than 30 seconds of video with it, but I guess we’ll find out.

That was crazy, crazy cool, Garrett.

I follow you on Tumblr. This is just fantastic. Happy life coding ;)

@Makenosound Not always, no, but I do wear it a good amount of time while working.

@Matthew Anderson Thanks!

Kudos! My video would be much less exciting. Should I still make one if it only consists of work, traffic and TV?

27 October 9th, 2008

twoeyes

Wait, no donkey porn yesterday?!

But seriously - really great stuff. It might be cool to include an approximate indication of the time too.

And, damn - that sand sandwich looked GOOD.

That is awesome! I do not like your Asics footwear though. So 2005 …

Nicely done… I’ve been wondering about that 28mm prime myself.

Regarding locking the exposure, it’s super easy: press the Info button on the back of your D90, then press it one more time and scroll to the last menu item on the right— Assign AE-L/AF-L button. Press OK then scroll down to the 4th option— AE lock (hold), and press OK.

Now go into Live View, point your camera towards what you want to expose for and press the AE-L/AF-L button. You should see “AE-L” at the bottom left of the monitor (it shouldn’t disappear but should remain there). The camera will now consistently expose for the scene you just pointed it at without you having to hold down the AE-L/AF-L button. Simply press the AE-L/AF-L button again when you’re done to tell the camera to “quit” exposing for the scene… Hope that helps!

36 October 9th, 2008

garrettmurray

@ashaleigh YES.

@twoeyes I don’t watch donkey porn! At least not every day. OR EVER!

@tdSkate I love the tigers. I have 3 pairs. 2005 or not.

@wilsonminer It’s a sickness. I know.

@sixminutes Thanks! I actually did that exact thing the other day and it didn’t work (I swear!) and I just did it again and it did. Yay!

@Josh I do buy groceries online, it’s true, but I buy little things day-to-day locally. You bastard.
