Underwater photography with the 5D is something I’ve been wanting to get into for awhile. Unfortunately, the barrier of incredibly expensive equipment and the knowledge of how to use it has kept me from doing so. Hooray for Phoot Camp and photographer Matt Corbitt, who stopped by the Phoot mansion to lead a fantastically fun underwater demo and workshop. Check out his blog for more of his work.

It took a collaboration between several people to create this image. Since I couldn’t reasonably communicate with Eddy very easily while shooting (and coming to the surface after every shot to talk proved too difficult due to the fact that I was wearing a weight belt to keep me underwater), Mona was stationed poolside with a tethered laptop to art direct while I stayed under the whole time. Woo!

But my favorite part of this yellow-themed photo? There’s actually a bee flying off of the flower. No, I’m serious, look close.

eddy was a fantastic underwater model. I can’t even remember how many takes we made him do, but it was a lot. and he didn’t even kick any of the lights over!

hi dad! matt (who led the workshop) is also a diver, so he brought some scuba tanks. one was anchored to the tripod that the underwater camera was on, so I just hung out down there and would take pictures whenever someone jumped in. whenever I pressed the shutter, the picture I took would appear on a computer up on a table outside the pool so that another photographer could see and say to the model “more to the left” or “more bees!” or whatever :)
